Pathological Findings on the Experimentally Infected Mice with the Swine Encephalomyocarditis Virus K3 Isolated in Korea

Abstract
Histopathologic studies on the eight, 23-week-old ICR mice inoculated intraperitoneally with encephalomyocarditis virus(EMCV) Korean isolate EMC K¡Ý at the dose of 0.1ml(10^(6.9)TCID_(50)/ml) per one animal were performed using light and electron microscopy.
Signs were not observed clinically except for slight neurologic signs, reduced activity and unkempt hair, and also not grossly other than the hepatic and pulmonary congestion.
Microscopic examination of the cerebral tissues revealed degeneration and necrosis of neurons, perivascular cuffings, and meningitis. Interstitial myocarditis occurred in the heart. Focal necrosis in the liver, acinar cell necrosis in the pancreas, and severe congestion of the lung were seen as well.
Ultrastrueturally, degeneration and necrssis of neurons and demyclination were present in the cerebram. In the myocardium, sweeping and vacuolization of mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticula and fragmentation of myofibrils were observed in myocytes.
